A tech CEO explains why he 'throws résumés out the door' — but places huge value on the cover letter - On an episode of the Work and Life podcast , Basecamp CEO Jason Fried explained why his company never looks at job candidates' credentials. "We basically throw résumés out the door," Fried told host Stew Friedman, who is the founding director of Wharton's Work/Life Integration Project. It doesn't matter if you went to Harvard or to your local community college — Fried thinks that's more or less irrelevant to your ability to thrive at the web development company. In fact, when I spoke with Fried in 2016, he told me Basecamp has hired several people who didn't graduate from or didn't attend any college and they're "wicked smart." A résumé "doesn't say anything really about what someone's cable of," Fried told Friedman. "We're always about getting to the realest possible thing, so we can cut through all the fog and find out if this person can do what they say." One way to do that is to have the candidate complete a sample project. Fried gave Friedman an example: Let's say Basecamp is hiring a designer. They'll give a candidate for that job one week to complete a project — and pay the candidate $1,500 for the work. Then Basecamp will ask the candidate to walk them through their thought process in a written summary of the project. This step is crucial. "We only hire good writers," Fried told Friedman. Because Basecamp's employees work all over the world, they communicate mostly via writing. Basecamp also publishes books and blog posts on topics like company culture. Fried said: "If you can't make your points clear and concisely; if you can't go into detail in a way that doesn't spark more questions than you're answering, then you're just not going to work out well here." That's why a solid cover letter is key. Fried said: "Can someone sell us on themselves in a very brief letter that's so well-written and so well-thought out that we're like, 'This person knows how to communicate'?" If there are ever two equally qualified candidates, but one's a more skilled writer, Fried said, "we will always hire the better writer." Real Acting : Source: Pxhere Public Domain We tend to think of acting as something done on stage in the movies or on TV. But were all acting all the time: at work in relationships and in that this is Psychology Today of course in psychodrama but also in standard counseling whether you're the client or counselor. Off-stage acting is viewed as unseemly phony but framed more accurately its the appropriate adapting to your counterpart's needs the opposite of the narcissism so often written about here on psychologytoday.com. Of course acting can be used for nefarious as well as benevolent purposes but thats true of most tools--from intelligence to a pocket knife. That doesnt obviate the value of learning how to be a better actor. To that end: As preeminent acting teacher Konstanin Stanlislavsky stressed acting is reacting. You must fully focus on receiving what the other person is saying in words tone and body. Take the time to take it all in before responding. Then respond not viscerallyand this is where the acting comes inbut as you deem wisest. The trick is to as actor Spencer Tracy said Never let em catch you acting. Usually that means not overactingless is more. So for example lets assume the person youre conversing with says I dont really care. But the tone and body language suggests s/he really does care. Perhaps deep down you dont particularly care that she doesnt care but its your job as a therapist to act like you do. So after youve taken in the message behind her message you decide to use a tone of voice that conveys just a bit of empathy not so much that it seems contrived and ask Are you sure you dont care? Your natural self might be phlegmatic or exuberant intellectual or emotional sensory or abstract but if you are to interact successfully with different kinds of people you must flex. In other words you must be an actor. Again the trick is remembering that usually less is more. If youre naturally laconic and interacting with a bubbly sort if you try to mirror that person it will likely come off as phony. The secret is to remember that everyone functions not statically but within a range: a taciturn person is sometime moreso other times less-so. The good actor would in that situation turn up the energy level to the top of his or her natural range so it makes the other person feel more comfortable but not suspect that it's acting. Save big emotions for when it will do the most good. A classroom teacher who screams at the class all the time quickly becomes impotent:The class inures to the yelling and continues to misbehave probably even moreso because the students resent the teacher's antipathy. In contrast that teacher who despite internally screaming acts calm (easier said than done) and reserves yelling for rare times when its particularly justified will have a better-behaved classroom. If you watch great movie actors even if they have justification for anger through much of the film they'll explode maybe once or twice. An example is Al Pacino in the underrated Godfather III. The advice to limit extreme emotional displays applies also to positive emotion: The chipper giggly type quickly gets blown off. Unless dealing with a true kindred spirit s/hed be wise to keep the inner Pollyanna under wraps until its unusually justified. The takeaway Effective usually understated acting is not intrinsically nefarious. Used to benevolent end it is the appropriate adaptation to others needs. Its an oft-disparaged skill that's worth cultivating.
